Adams Opticians, Dewsbury

Independent opticians in Savile Town. NHS and private eye tests. Steiner Vision partner.

A family-run practice on South Street, looking after Dewsbury's eyes for years. Plenty of patients who had their first eye test here as children now bring in their own. We're independent, so nobody sets us sales targets: if your glasses are fine, we'll tell you.

Steiner Vision varifocals in Dewsbury

Steiner's DSI+ progressive lenses are designed around how your eyes actually move. Built on neuroscience research and over a million real-life measurements, they're made to measure for your eyes, your frame and the way you wear your glasses.

That means clear vision straight away at every distance, less swaying and edge blur, and an easier time adapting than with standard varifocals. Steiner has made precision optics in Germany since 1947.

As a registered Steiner partner, we see patients from across West Yorkshire and beyond, many after struggling with varifocals somewhere else.

Eye tests, glasses and contact lenses

Eye examinations

NHS and private eye tests, each with a full 30-minute slot. A proper eye test checks the health of your eyes as well as your prescription, and is often where conditions like glaucoma or diabetic eye changes are first picked up.

Varifocals

Nine times out of ten, when someone "can't get on with varifocals", it was the measurements, not the lens. We take our time fitting them. If you've struggled before, bring your old pair and we'll work out what went wrong.

Office and computer lenses

Standard varifocals give you a narrow strip for screen distance. Office lenses widen that zone for desk work and screens, so no more lifting your chin at the monitor.

Driving lenses

Designed to cut glare from headlights and wet roads, with sharp focus on the dashboard and mirrors. Worth asking about if night driving has got harder.

Frames

Everyday and designer frames at sensible prices, fitted properly to your face.

Contact lenses

Fittings, aftercare and supplies for daily and monthly lenses. If you gave up on contacts years ago, they've come a long way.

Children's eye tests

Free on the NHS, with a voucher towards glasses. Children don't need to read letters for us to check their eyes.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to register before booking an NHS eye test?

No. New NHS patients can simply book. There's nothing to sign up to first.

How much is an eye test at Adams Opticians?

NHS eye tests are free if you're eligible. A private eye examination is £25 and a contact lens consultation is £45.

How long does an eye test take?

Every examination gets a full 30-minute slot.

Do you accept work eye-test vouchers?

Yes. Bring the voucher, or the details from your employer.

How often should I have my eyes tested?

For most adults, every two years. Children, people over 70, and anyone with diabetes or a family history of glaucoma may need testing every year.

I've never got on with varifocals. Is it worth trying again?

Very often, yes. Most people who can't wear varifocals were given a lens that wasn't measured or fitted properly. Bring your old pair and we'll look at what went wrong.

What are Steiner Vision lenses?

German-engineered varifocal lenses, made to measure for your eyes and frame. Adams Opticians in Dewsbury is a registered Steiner Vision partner, and patients travel from across West Yorkshire for them.

What is the STEINER Challenge?

Steiner's 2026 Vision Initiative: EasyFit varifocals at £159.50 complete or ClearSight at £309.50 complete, with a 60-day money-back guarantee and 24 months' prescription cover. Limited to 1,000 people in the UK.

Can I drive after my eye test?

Usually, yes. If we need to use drops that blur your vision for a few hours, we'll tell you beforehand so you can arrange a lift.

Do you do contact lenses?

Yes. A contact lens consultation is £45, including fitting and teaching you how to use them. Wearers need regular aftercare, usually once a year.

Privacy notice

Adams Opticians Ltd is the data controller for the personal information we hold about you. We are registered with the Information Commissioner's Office, registration number [ICO REG NO].

What we hold

Your name, address, date of birth and contact details; your NHS number and benefit details where you claim NHS services; your eye examination records, prescriptions, frame and lens measurements; and payment records.

Why we hold it

To provide your eye care and eyewear, to claim NHS fees for the services you receive, to remind you when your next check is due, and to meet our legal and professional obligations. We rely on providing health care (UK GDPR Article 9(2)(h)), performing our contract with you, our legal obligations, and for NHS services, a task carried out in the public interest.

Who we share it with

Only where needed for your care or our legal duties: your GP, hospital eye services and other clinicians we refer you to; the NHS bodies that pay for NHS sight tests and vouchers; and lens laboratories, who receive your prescription and measurements only. We never sell your information or use it for third-party marketing.

How long we keep it

Clinical records are kept in line with College of Optometrists guidance, usually 10 years after your last visit for adults and until at least a child's 25th birthday. They are then securely destroyed.

Your rights

You can ask to see a copy of your records, have mistakes corrected, object to reminders, or ask us to restrict or delete information where the law allows. Ask in person, by phone or by email to info@adamsopticians.net. There is normally no charge.

If you're unhappy with how we've handled your information, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk or on 0303 123 1113.

If something hasn't gone right, please tell us. Speak to any member of staff, ring 01924 506466, email info@adamsopticians.net, or write to the Practice Manager at 41 South Street, Savile Town, Dewsbury WF12 9NB.

We'll acknowledge your complaint within 3 working days and aim to give you a full response within 20 working days. If it will take longer, we'll tell you why.

NHS services

If your complaint is about an NHS sight test or voucher and you'd rather not raise it with us, or you're unhappy with our response, contact the Primary Care Complaints Team, West Yorkshire Integrated Care Board: wyicb.complaints@nhs.net, 01924 552 150, or White Rose House, West Parade, Wakefield WF1 1LT. If you're still not satisfied, you can go to the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman at ombudsman.org.uk.

Private services and eyewear

If we can't resolve a complaint about private care or products, the Optical Consumer Complaints Service offers free, independent mediation: opticalcomplaints.co.uk.

Terms and returns

Glasses and contact lenses are made to your individual prescription and measurements. This does not affect your statutory rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. If anything we supply is faulty, not as described, or not made to your prescription, we'll put it right.

If you have trouble getting used to new glasses, come back and see us. Most problems can be sorted with an adjustment or recheck, and we'll always look at what's wrong before suggesting anything new.

Deposits are taken when glasses are ordered, because lenses are made for you. NHS vouchers are applied in line with NHS rules. Prices and offers are available in practice.
