Myopia Control for Children in Kettering

Evidence-based myopia management at Stirling Opticians

Myopia (short-sightedness) is becoming increasingly common in children. At Stirling Opticians, we provide modern, evidence-based myopia control to help slow progression and support long-term eye health.

Our approach combines proven optical treatments with advanced monitoring using biometry and OCT, allowing us to manage myopia more accurately and proactively.

What is myopia?

Myopia is a condition where distance vision is blurred while near vision remains clear. It often develops in childhood and can continue to worsen as the eye grows.

What is myopia control?

Myopia control focuses on slowing the progression of short-sightedness, rather than simply correcting vision with standard glasses or contact lenses.

Why early myopia management matters

Higher levels of myopia are associated with an increased risk of eye problems later in life. Slowing progression during childhood may reduce long-term risks.

Myopia control treatments we offer

At Stirling Opticians, we provide clinically proven myopia control options:

  • HOYA MiYOSMART spectacle lenses

  • CooperVision MiSight 1 day contact lenses

We always discuss suitability, benefits, and practical considerations before recommending treatment.

How we monitor myopia progression

Biometry and axial length measurement

Biometry measures the axial length of the eye. In myopia, the eye grows longer than normal, making axial length one of the most accurate indicators of progression.

OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography)

OCT is a non-invasive, painless scan that provides detailed images of the eye’s internal structures. It supports accurate baseline assessment and long-term monitoring.

Do all children need biometry or OCT?

No. These measurements are most useful when myopia is progressing, begins at a young age, or when myopia control treatment is being started or monitored.

How often are children reviewed?

Children in myopia control programmes are typically reviewed every 6–12 months, depending on age, prescription, and risk of progression.

Does myopia control replace regular eye tests?

No. Myopia control works alongside a full eye examination and does not replace routine sight tests.

NHS eye tests and myopia control

Eligible children can still have NHS-funded eye examinations. Myopia control treatments are usually provided privately, with all fees explained in advance.
